Protein powder will be your new best friend both before and after weight loss surgery. Picking out the right kind is crucial to your success.
Follow these guidelines for purchasing the right protein powder!
1. Choose whey protein isolate. This type of protein powder gives you the most protein for your buck without all the extra carbs and fats. Whey protein isolate is also very low in lactose so it's easier on your digestion.
2. 20-30 grams of protein per serving. During the first two months after surgery, you will NEED the protein you get from these shakes because you won't be able to get it all from food. Making sure your powder has at least 20-30 grams of protein will ensure you're getting enough throughout the day.
3. ~150 calories per serving. Your protein powder should be used as a supplement, not a meal replacement. For that reason, keep the calories of your powder to about 150 calories per serving.
4. Less than 10 grams of carbs. Protein should really be the main focus seeing as this should be a protein supplement. Sticking with a powder that's low carb and low-fat is key.
5. No added sugars. Added sugar is never good! Avoid it when you're purchasing a protein powder.
6. Buy powders, not premade shakes, and mix with water or skim milk. Pre-made shakes are generally higher in calories, carbs, and fat making them more of a meal replacement. That's not what you need!
7. Start with basic flavors like chocolate, vanilla, or unflavored. There are so many flavors of protein powder out there but when you're just starting out, it's best to stick with basic flavors and go from there.
