5 TIPS FOR HOME WORKOUTS

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

Although very different, working out from home can be just as effective as working out in the gym. We know it can be incredibly easy to choose the couch over your yoga mat but we promise that with a little effort on your end, you can save yourself so much time & money by choosing to work out at home.

Here's some guidance on making the most out of your home workouts:

Create a workout space.

Before anything, you have to decide where in your home you're going to work out. Do you have space in your basement to turn into a mini gym or will you just have to move your coffee table out of the way whenever it's time? Maybe you can keep a basket of dumbbells and resistance bands right in your bedroom.

It's important to think about all the ways you can use your home:

  • Staircases are awesome for getting in some cardio.

  • You can clean your house for 15 minutes as a warm-up. Don't underestimate the workout you'll get from scrubbing the tub or mopping the floor!

  • Take it outside. Use your deck, backyard, or even driveway!

Schedule it in.

Just like you would make time for going to the gym, you have to make time for your home work out. Don't say to yourself, "I'll do it later," because chances are you won't! Create a workout schedule and stick to it. Being at home can create many distractions but you have to be rigid with your schedule. When it's time to workout, drop everything you're doing and go workout. The laundry can wait. The dishes can wait. Don't let those distractions sidetrack you from your goals.

Use a mirror.

Gyms are loaded with huge mirrors and for good reason! Looking at yourself in the mirror while working out isn't just for vanity reasons. When you look at yourself during exercise, you can notice your form and adjust it if you need to. You may not know if your form is 100% correct if you don't have a trainer but you'll have a much better idea if you can see yourself in the mirror. Any cheap full-length mirror works!

Use some equipment... or don't.

You don't NEED any equipment to get in a good workout at your home. There are plenty of bodyweight exercises that will give you a killer work out. Exercises like squats, push-ups, and burpees are all awesome exercises that even the fittest people still break a sweat when doing them.

Having some equipment can be super helpful though. You can add so much variety with just a set of dumbbells and some resistance bands. You don't have to buy a bunch of fancy and expensive fitness equipment. We recommend investing in three sets of dumbbells (light - 3-5 lbs., medium - 8-10 lbs., and heavy - 12-15 lbs.) *This will definitely vary based on age, gender, and fitness level!*

Take advantage of technology.

Thanks to the internet and to technology, you can find just about any kind of exercise video or app that you can think of. A quick YouTube search can provide you with a plethora of different workout videos ranging from beginner bodyweight workouts to an advanced pilates class to a Zumba class!

There are also a ton of apps that can provide workout guidance and motivation. We love Home Workout and Nike Training Club.

No matter what your reason is for having to skip the gym, there are plenty of ways for you to stick to your weight loss and fitness goals and get in a solid sweat sesh right at home.
